Early mornings and Jane Eyre

So, more than a week into my new (very) early morning writing routine, and I’m pleased to say that it seems to be working. I’m getting more words per day, and they feel like better ones. (I mean, they may not be better ones, but they feel that way.)

Something is clicking in these early-morning sessions, writing before the day intrudes. I don’t even check the weather before I start writing. But I get my words in, and then it doesn’t matter so much how the rest of my day goes. Like last week, when the furnace decided to stop working.

I also decided to dive into the slow read of Jane Eyre. In fact, I was listening to my chapters yesterday instead of writing my check-in. And while the narrator is working well in the audio version, it’s really Caroline’s voice that is so soothing. I loved listening to the Possession debriefs, and I’m looking forward to the first Jane Eyre one today.

  1. Your morning routine sounds luxurious — a lovely way to connect with your imagination (and your writing) before launching off into the day. The furnace situation, though? I’m so sorry to hear about this. The last thing you need while reading Jane Eyre is to feel like you’re actually living at Lowood School. Hope the heat is restored (and remains!).

    1. Heat is back on. And you’re right, it really is a luxurious way to start my day. My schedule is my own, so I might as well adjust things to when I do my best work.

  2. Hi Charity! 🙂 I remember you posted somewhere that you were going to blog this year, and I also remember that I planned on checking in regularly… However, that was 2 viruses ago–tough winter. Anyway, I’m really happy to visit an actual blog again. I AM an early morning writer, too, the earlier the better. I like to get at least 500 words out of the way in the first 30 minutes, then a slow and leisurely deep dive into prompts or my WIP after that. When I write first thing in the morning, it feels like I can hear my own voice better, like all the voices of the people around me, in person and virtually, haven’t taken root in my brain yet. I need to revisit Jane Eyre. I confess I only read it once, and I didn’t like it at the time, but Lord knows, I’ve changed a lot since then!

    1. Von! I’m so glad you’re here! I know what you mean about hearing your own voice early in the morning. I can hear my characters’ voices better, too. And since they live rent free in my head, I might as well write out their adventures.
