Mine’s a little … odd? For me, it’s after the ground war portion of Desert Storm had ended, but we were still in Kuwait. Our headquarters company had just brought all our baggage and such from Log Base Echo in Saudi Arabia.
Included in that was a footlocker stuffed full of paperback books (courtesy of the family support group–thank you, family support group). Fortunately, there were choices beyond Tom Clancy. (Really, we’re in the middle of the desert, do any of us want to be reading Red Storm Rising? Apparently, yes, although not me.)
I found plenty of mysteries to read, and I’d take them out to the berm that surrounded our bivouac (we set up shop in a former Iraqi position), sit, watch the Kuwaiti oil fire burns, and then read until there wasn’t enough light to see the print.
