Hmmm…. it looks like this is another area where my reading has been sadly remiss. Even after browsing the Goodreads lists, the only story I’d read was Alice in Wonderland. The most memorable story I can recall about a cat, was Thomasina — a movie, actually; the first movie I ever saw — about a cat who escaped its home; the motherless children who searched for it; and the beautiful healer who lived in a magical cottage in the middle of the woods who rescued the cat, and, coincidentally, the children and their very lonely father. 🩷
And, of course, there’s Tybalt the fierce but charming mouser, brought in — alas temporarily — by Pierce, Emma’s garret-mate in The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion (whose last name is a kind of cat).
Ah, yes. We need to add Tybalt to the list of wonderful fictional cats.
So, it’s been a while (like more than fifteen years a while), but I still remember the talking cat in Plain Kate by Erin Bow. I don’t remember much about the story, except that I did enjoy it, the cat in particular.
And, of course, The Master and and Margarita, Alice in Wonderland, The Incredible Journey (which I mentioned last week, but yes, a book I had on repeat growing up). I’m pretty certain I’ve read at least one Rita Mae Brown mystery with a cat, and the ones by Lilian Jackson Braun with Koko and Yum Yum (although, it’s been a while).
I’m sure I’m missing some cats, and I’ll need to apologize to them later.
My mid went completely blank with this one so I just picked covers with cats lol. I Totally forgot the cat from the Emma series! I feel dumb now lol.

The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa would definitely be on my list. It starts with such a simple relationship between a man and his cat but gradually becomes much more emotional than you expect. Cats can make surprisingly effective characters when the author gives them a real personality. https://roozaneh.net/
