Captured! (Screens, that its)

A while back, I logged into the WordPress Dashboard and saw this:

Now there’s something we’re not going to see for a while. Probably a long while.

And the other day, I logged into LibraryThing and saw that I could check to see if, according to LibraryThing, I would like The Geek Girl’s Guide to Cheerleading. What was the result? Let’s look:

So, LibraryThing thinks I won’t like it! And they’re really sure about it too. Of course, that warning/error right above the bar might have something to do with it.

The obligatory summer festival post

Yesterday was the annual summer festival, which is pretty much everyone’s favorite day around here. Well, it used to be. If you view the photographic evidence, you might think otherwise:

morose
It's like I'm forcing them to have fun.
frown
Frown much?
lemonade
Andrew learns that life's lessons are not found at the bottom of a lemonade cup.

So, was a good time eventually had by all? More after the cut:

Week in review

I know I haven’t been blogging here (much), but I’ve been crazy-busy blogging with Darcy on our Geek Girl’s Guide blog tour. So, we’re all over the ‘net from the 8th through the 30th.

And writing an original blog post for each day that is, we hope, fun and entertaining is a lot harder than it looks. I am in short supply of the witty these days (fortunately, Darcy is not).

Curious about where we are and what we’re writing about? You can follow along at Goddess Fish Promotions or the Geek Girl site. So far, we’ve written more about our story behind the story, pieces on what it’s like to collaborate, fun and funny interviews.

In other Geek Girl news:

A while back Writer’s Digest had a call out for first-time publishing stories. I wrote something up, sent it in, then promptly forgot about it. They contacted me a while back to verify some info in case they used my piece. But since I heard nothing further, I assumed they didn’t. I found out via a friend of a friend that my little write up is in the July/August issue.

The issue isn’t on the stands yet, so I haven’t actually seen the write up (I don’t have a subscription, so I have to stalk the bookstores to get mine).

And! I’m going to be on the radio! It’s local radio, KMSU (Minnesota State at Mankato), but it’s the good kind of local, since I grew up in Mankato and the town in Geek Girl’s Guide is kind of/sort of based on Mankato. I’ll be on The Weekly Reader with Rachael Hanel.

I’m taping on Monday, but I don’t know what day the interview will air. I’ll let you know, since thanks to the wonders of the internet, you’ll be able to stream it. Yeah. I know. Freaky.

Bears and books

I’m posting this picture simply because I find it amusing. This is what happens when “the boys” go shopping together. Clearly, Andrew is in pain.

So, it was the last day of school on Friday. Miss B and I debated what to give her teacher. Andrew suggested I give her a copy of The Geek Girl’s Guide to Cheerleading. I thought that would be … I don’t know, weird? Ego-centric. We went with a gift card from Barnes and Noble.

As luck would have it, we met Miss B’s teacher in the hall as we walked into school. Kyra gave her the present and the drawing she’d made. Her teacher seemed very pleased and said, “Now I can go buy some books!”

Kyra said, “Even my mommy’s book.”

Ha. So no matter what I do, my kids are still determined to be my publicist.

The wonderful world of words

I was doing various chores/writing/whatever yesterday and Miss B was playing some quiet game. It was just the two of us at home and we were quite content. Then, I heard a laugh and she called out:

Mommy, come see how high this dude is!

My first reaction to this was: Wha–? since more than one definition for that word ran through my head. It seemed that I really needed to check out this dude.

The dude in questioned turned out to be a little Snoopy doll she had poised at the tip-top of a stuff animal clubhouse made of pillows. So, yeah. He was up there pretty high. You might even say he was high.

Sometimes, context is everything.

While I cleaning/clearing things yesterday, I came across a paper Kyra wrote that illustrates the writing lesson of sometimes it’s the word you leave out that’s important (corrected for spelling):

I wish that I lived in a castle because I am a pirate princess but I live in a nice house. I have a nice bed and nice stuff and a brother.

Poor Andrew. He always gets the short end of things, doesn’t he.

Things I’m doing on this rainy Sunday (in no particular order)

  1. Updating the Geek Girl site.
  2. Creating the promotion spreadsheet of doom. I didn’t actually name the file that, but I’m thinking of changing it.
  3. Scanning pictures of my (possibly illegal) trip into East Germany back in the day. Geek girl’s guide to the Eastern Bloc anyone? Anyone?
  4. Convincing Andrew to be a sport and let his sister be president of the glass animals. Apparently all voting takes place when she isn’t in the room.
  5. Writing trying to write avoiding the press release.
  6. Thinking about the Tuscan Trifle Tiramisu gelato in the freezer. It’s made in Italy, so you know it’s got to be good. And it was totally on sale yesterday.

Oh, the drama

So, I was doing some promo work tonight, writing a serious email to Darcy (okay, only semi-serious), trying to figure out all the contest stuff for Geek Girl (win books! win books!), when I hear this from the other room:

“Sister, I’m being absorbed. Use the blue monkey! He’ll help you.”
“Brother, I’ll miss you!”
“I’ll miss you too. You must carry on!”

There was much more, in the same vein, but I was laughing too hard to transcribe it.
