Weekly writing check-in: the one with Fine Art (almost) everywhere

So, I decided to pull The Fine Art of Holding Your Breath from KDP Select. I wanted to try a countdown deal (because I hate running a 99 cent promo and only earning 35% per sale–I want that 70%), and I wanted to see how the borrows might work for this book.

I’m not getting enough borrows to justify leaving it exclusively at Amazon, so here it goes, out into the wild. It’s now available on several sites (see links below).

I started a new short story this week, a complete turnabout from what I just finished writing, so the work was a little bit slower. Plus, I’m taking a class in narrative design.

Not to mention, we’re up to our ears in Girl Scout cookies here. Anybody want to buy a box … or ten?

Weekly writing check-in: the one with the Girl with the Piccolo

So, this week came with a very nice surprise. The Girl with the Piccolo made the list for Best of Cast of Wonders for 2014.

Plus, I made a submission. A new one! At long last. So, there’s that. I also worked on the print layout for Now and Later. It’s a little bit trickier than a novel layout since I need to build a table of contents, apply a different “master” to each short story, and so on.

  • Writing ~ 9,207 words (Five more words than last week. That’s crucial, people, crucial.)
  • Print layout for Now and Later

Weekly writing check-in: the one with the talking Valentine

So, I was very excited to see hear The Burden of So Many Roses in audio in time for Valentine’s Day. I figured it would go live right about that time, but it was still a nice surprise.

Otherwise, just a touch over 9,000 words this week. No subs or anything. I’m itching to switch to short fiction for a while, but my stories keep morphing into longer things (current project word count: ~70,000 words). Maybe once this current story is done. Maybe.

For Valentine’s Day: The Burden of So Many Roses in audio

Just in time for Valentine’s Day! The Burden of So Many Roses is now in audio over at Toasted Cake.  Having a bad day? Well, have a listen. It could be much, much worse.

Weekly writing check-in: the one with the talking ghost

Getting my writing groove on this week with ~8,000 words. In  a surprise move, I received an acceptance this week for audio/reprint rights for Ghost in the Coffee Machine. So, not only did I sell this story once, I sold it again. Word to the wise: keep as many rights as you possibly can. In the case of Ghost, I control them all.

And sometimes that pays off. Also, I love audio/podcasts, and I’m very excited about this.

Weekly writing check-in: the one with the best in category

The Kindle Countdown Deal for The Fine Art of Holding Your Breath is wrapping up. If you want to grab a copy for 99 cents, you have about a day and a half to do so. Also, maybe this just happened:

bestseller

So. Yeah. That was fun. Otherwise, I had a good writing week of about 1,000 words a day, and a good writing month as well. I’d love to inch that monthly word count up to 40,000. I don’t have that far to go, so we’ll see.

Two countdown deals and a new release

That’s right. Two countdown deals this week and a new release. Why? Because I can? Because I’m crazy? You pick.

Weekly writing check-in: the one with the Flash Fiction Online anthology

Well, that was a nice surprise. Flash Fiction Online has published a 2014 anthology of their stories. And look! It has Straying from the Path. Plus? My name on the cover as well. Very, very cool.

Also, if you like to read and write flash fiction and want to study an excellent market, pick up a copy of this anthology. You’ll get a great feel for what the editors are looking for.

In other news, I didn’t quite make my 1,000 words/day goal this week, but I came close. I also did a little formatting and other whatnot in prep for this week’s Kindle Countdown Deal for The Fine Art of Holding Your Breath.

Speaking of which, three more days to enter the giveaway:

Weekly writing check-in: the one with a cookie rally

Busy week this week with Girl Scout stuff. We took a tour of the local police station. One of the K9 dogs was on duty and we got to meet her. So cool. We also participated in a cookie rally, which was a … thing. No, it was fine, but it will be nice to sit and do a little editing today.

Otherwise, a submission, a few rejections (I was following up on outstanding 2014 submissions), and I finished a novelette.

Weekly writing check-in: the one with yet another novel

I am really psyched about those two submissions this week. I’m hoping to build my list back up to a respectable level. I have some reprints I’d like to submit to audio markets. I would like to write a few more short stories too, although I can’t seem to stop myself from writing novelettes, so we’ll see how that goes.

Speaking of which, I’m doing something a bit different: working on two things at once, a novel and a novelette. So far it seems to be working.

And, of course, The Fine Art of Holding Your Breath is out, and you can read all about it, the Goodreads giveaway, and the countdown deal in yesterday’s post.
