Debs 09 Music giveaway

Jordyn over at Ten Cent Notes has put together two playlists based on 2009 debut novels.

A:

  1. Glamorous – Fergie (Exclusively Chloe, by J.A. Yang)
  2. Breathe – Taylor Swift (Breathing, by Cheryl Renee Herbsman)
  3. The Not-So Pretty Princess – Jude (My Big Nose, by Sydney Salter)
  4. The Reason – Hoobastank (The Geek Girl’s Guide to Cheerleading, by Charity Tahmaseb and Darcy Vance)
  5. Love Like This – Natasha Bedingfeild (Shrinking Violet, by Danielle Joseph)
  6. Anti-Pop – Matthew Good (Cracked Up to Be, by Courtney Summers)
  7. Just Like Heaven – The Cure (This Is What I Want to Tell You, by Heather Duffy-Stone)
  8. California Stars – Wilco (20 Boy Summer, by Sarah Ockler)

B:

  1. Anyone at All – Carole King (The Espressologist, by Kristina Springer)
  2. In-Between Days – The Cure (Flash Burnout, by L.K. Madigan)
  3. Little Boxes – The Shins (Candor, by Pam Bachorz)
  4. Love Story – Taylor Swift (Prada & Prejudice, by Mandy Hubbard)
  5. Over My Head – The Fray (Lipstick Apology, by Jennifer Jabaley)
  6. Make Your Own Kind of Music – Cass Elliot (The Secrets of Truth & Beauty, by Megan Frazer)
  7. Mario Kart Love Song – Sam Hart (The Geek Girl’s Guide to Cheerleading, by Charity Tahmaseb and Darcy Vance)
  8. Time Turned Fragile – Motion City Soundtrack (Break, by Hannah Moskovitz)

And between now and the 15th, you can win one of these playlists–all for a comment. So, hurry on over.

I’m pretty psyched Geek Girl is on both playlists. I think Mario Kart Love Song must be Darcy’s contribution (either that, or I was contributing in another dimension–cuz I don’t remember suggesting that song).

The Reason by Hoobastank is my contribution, and it’s the song I associated with Geek Girl’s Guide. Well, that and it’s fun to say Hoobastank. Go on. Try it.

Anyway, Geek Girl never had a full playlist. There’s a few songs that I when I hear them, I’ll think of Geek Girl, but The Reason is the song. Every time it came on the radio, I’d take that as a good omen: it meant: I should write/revise/query and so on.

So … enjoy. And be sure to enter Jordyn’s contest.

Geek Girlish news

So today I discovered that VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates) reviewed The Geek Girl’s Guide to Cheerleading. It’s a terrific review with a terrific pull quote:

This novel is contemporary, laugh-outloud funny, and positive.

I’m going to point you to the Barnes & Noble website for the rest, since 1) I’m not sure I have permission to reprint the review here, and 2) it contains some mild-ish plot spoilers. You’ve been warned.

In other bookish news, the 2009 Cybils awards are now taking nominations. Anyone may nominate a children’s, middle grade, or young adult book (fiction or nonfiction) published between Oct. 16, 2008 and midnight, Oct. 15th, 2009. I’ve already nominated Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith (review forthcoming, I promise). If you’ve read some kid lit this year that you feel passionate about, head on over and make a nomination.

The Austen Inspired First Line Contest!

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that an avid reader must be in want of these new YA books!

This really is the geek girl’s guide to collages

I found this site today, Polyvore, where you can take images, products, and so on and combine them into what they call sets, but what are essentially online collages. From the site:

Polyvore is a free, easy-to-use web-based application for mixing and matching images from anywhere on the web. It is also a vibrant community of creative and stylish people.

Well, they must be vibrant and creative, seeing that one of their members included The Geek Girl’s Guide to Cheerleading in a set:

There we are, in the lower right hand corner (in case you missed us). I love all the blues in this set. I love the fact she included our book. That is pretty much the coolest thing ever.

And I’m itching to try Polyvore the next time I want to make a collage. I already spent way too much time scrolling through all the sets featuring Converse All Stars.

Me, on the radio

Well, the interview went well, from the perspective that I didn’t faint during the middle of it. I say, whenever I don’t faint in the middle of something, well, that’s a good day.

Did I speak words in the English language? That remains to be seen (or heard as the case may be). I’m not sure I have the nerve to listen.

However, if you have the nerve, it will air this Thursday at 10:30. I’m up first, followed by the lovely Sarah Ockler who will talk about her YA novel Twenty Boy Summer (up next on my TBR pile).

Rachael’s show, The Weekly Reader, is part of the Minnesota Morning programming at the station. You can listen live online, if you so choose. If you’re using Windows, you’re probably already set up for Windows Media Player. Click the link and the program should launch and after it buffers, you’ll hear the show.

Week in review

I know I haven’t been blogging here (much), but I’ve been crazy-busy blogging with Darcy on our Geek Girl’s Guide blog tour. So, we’re all over the ‘net from the 8th through the 30th.

And writing an original blog post for each day that is, we hope, fun and entertaining is a lot harder than it looks. I am in short supply of the witty these days (fortunately, Darcy is not).

Curious about where we are and what we’re writing about? You can follow along at Goddess Fish Promotions or the Geek Girl site. So far, we’ve written more about our story behind the story, pieces on what it’s like to collaborate, fun and funny interviews.

In other Geek Girl news:

A while back Writer’s Digest had a call out for first-time publishing stories. I wrote something up, sent it in, then promptly forgot about it. They contacted me a while back to verify some info in case they used my piece. But since I heard nothing further, I assumed they didn’t. I found out via a friend of a friend that my little write up is in the July/August issue.

The issue isn’t on the stands yet, so I haven’t actually seen the write up (I don’t have a subscription, so I have to stalk the bookstores to get mine).

And! I’m going to be on the radio! It’s local radio, KMSU (Minnesota State at Mankato), but it’s the good kind of local, since I grew up in Mankato and the town in Geek Girl’s Guide is kind of/sort of based on Mankato. I’ll be on The Weekly Reader with Rachael Hanel.

I’m taping on Monday, but I don’t know what day the interview will air. I’ll let you know, since thanks to the wonders of the internet, you’ll be able to stream it. Yeah. I know. Freaky.

In which we break some child labor laws

Over at the Geek Girl site, we’re hosting a big launch contest, which if you’re not related to me (or Darcy) you should really enter. You can win a prize bag for yourself (including the new iPod shuffle) and your best friend. Dude!

We’ve been getting a lot of great entries and I’ve been posting some to the site, but I decided a little color would be good. Since Miss B was already drawing pictures of herself and her BFF, I asked if she could provide some more.

So she did:

Bff

bff4

bff2

bff3

My only problem now? She’s gone on strike. Apparently she’s completely tapped out on BFF situations to draw. After all, you can’t force art.

Adventures in Danville

Our adventures in Danville this weekend. I’m testing out the gallery function here on WordPress, mainly because I’m feeling oh, so tired, lazy, innovative.

Andrew was dying to go to Big Boy (don’t ask, I have no idea why), which we finally did after we went rollerskating and played laser tag on Sunday.

This morning on the way to school, I asked Kyra what her favorite part of the trip was. She said, “Meeting Darcy.”

Awwww.
