Free Fiction Friday: In a Manner of Speaking

What if time doesn’t run out?

Soshi Patel believes herself the last inhabitant on earth, trapped in an abandoned prepper’s shelter, living by candlelight and on canned peaches. Out of desperation, she uses the last of her good candles to build a ham radio from a kit. When she connects with a voice on the other side, it’s more than she could’ve hoped for.

But this voice, this Jatar, knows things he shouldn’t. As he comforts Soshi through the last days on a dying earth, it becomes clear that he carries his own burden, the weight of which can only be measured in time.

Download for free over on Instafreebie or listen over at Escape Pod.

Note: this is probably the saddest story I’ve ever written; you’ve been warned.

Weekly writing check-in: the one with a best of anthology

It was a busy week, but I managed to squeeze in 6,000 words, on various things. I also received a surprise email this week. My vignette, Playing Soldier, which appeared in issue #9 of Vine Leaves Literary Journal, was selected to be part of The Best of Vine Leaves Literary Journal 2014. Am I pretty excited about this? Well, yes. Yes, I am.

Lots of writers are talking about National Novel Writing Month, what with November right around the corner. I’m not going to join that, but I would love to reach 50,000 words in November, on various projects. I’d love to finish the Coffee & Ghosts serial, and I think there might be a novella kicking around in my subconscious, although I’m not 100% certain about that.

  • Coffee & Ghosts series bible, more or less done
  • Miscellaneous writing ~ 6,000 words

Free time? How about a free read?

Need some free time? Need to learn how to steal time? Well, maybe I can help. Or not. What I can do is give you a free read.

This week, Just a Matter of Time will have a free run on Amazon, Monday through Friday. Grab it while you can! Want to know more? Keep reading:

Sadie Lin: High school junior Sadie is desperate–to maintain her GPA, to score high on the SATs, to see her dad return from Afghanistan. Time crawls and slip through her fingers all at once. She thinks it’s all in her head.

It’s not.

Gordon Bakersfield: Gordon–Sadie’s ninth grade epic crush–has plenty of time and knows where to get more. He knows someone has been stealing Sadie’s time. And while he’s not sure how to make it stop, he’s hoping to try. But can Sadie trust him?

Only time will tell.

Weekly writing check-in: the one with a series bible

Oh, yes. A series bible for the Coffee & Ghosts series? (And yes, do you admire my unbelievably creative name for the series?) Absolutely a good idea. I found a few places where I will need to adjust either this story or that, figure out where–exactly–one of the characters lives, and so on.

It was also one of those weeks where I had a bunch of random story ideas pop up in my head, so I jotted a few of them down, and now I’m wondering how to steal a bit more time to write all the things.

Speaking of stealing time: Just a Matter of Time will have a free run on Amazon starting tomorrow. Five days! Grab it for free while you can and all that.

Writing Work:

  • Coffee & Ghosts series bible
  • Story brainstorming: many ideas, not nearly enough time. Must. Type. Faster.

Submissions:

  • None

Rejections:

  • None

Acceptances:

  • None

Publications:

  • None, but! Upcoming promo! Starting Monday and lasting for five days, you can grab a copy of Just a Matter of Time on Kindle for free.

Weekly writing check-in: the one with all the rain

slow roadThis week was filled with rain and launch activities for the release of The Fine Art of Keeping QuietI’m really pleased with the free read activity (see links below). I love being able to offer a try-before-you buy sample. (I also love downloading and reading those myself, which is the main reason I’m doing this.)

It’s getting downloads at Barnes and Noble and Apple, but it’s no surprise that the most action is at Amazon:

Otherwise, I did more work on Pansy, some world building and what I call, for lack of a better term, structural work. I’d like to say I’ve done more writing work this week, but I can’t.

No submissions, but then, no rejections either. I still have some pending work out there, too. I suspect there will be a deluge of rejections much like the rain we’ve had this week.

Writing Work:

Rejections:

Acceptances:

Publications:

It’s still free! Get two young adult short stories and the first four chapters of The Fine Art of Keeping Quiet.
