YALSA 2012 Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults: Get Your Geek On!

So excited to announce that The Geek Girl’s Guide to Cheerleading is a YALSA 2012 Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults pick in the Get Your Geek On category!

In fact, I’m so excited, I keep checking the list–and then zooming past our listing. Then I’m all:

Oh, no! I just announced this to the world and look, we’re not there!

Then I check again. Yes, yes. We’re (still) there.

In the words of Darcy: I ❤ librarians.

We do. It’s true. Also true? There’s some good reading in those lists. Just from 2012, you can choose from:

  • Adventure Seekers
  • Forbidden Romance
  • Get Your Geek On
  • Sticks and Stones

But take a look at all the lists compiled through the years. If you’re doing the Fifty/Fifty challenge, you could build a major or a minor based on those categories.

So, what are you waiting for? Get reading!

Geek Girl makes a list!

Our editor emailed us the other day to let us know that The Geek Girl’s Guide to Cheerleading was nominated for the 2012 Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults list, which is sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) of the American Library Association. Geek Girl is nominated in the Get Your Geek On category (appropriately enough).

Be sure to click through and check out all the books on the list. It could keep you reading all summer long. Plus, other 2009 Debs are keeping us company, such as Jennifer Hubbard (The Secret Year) and Jennifer Brown (Hate List).

Words of encouragement

I hope to post a recap of the MEMO conference in the next few days. Short review: It was fun! I had a blast and sold some books.

Here’s the note Kyra wrote to me before I left:

From: Kyra
To: Mom

Make sure to not tuck in your shirt and don’t forget to look your best. I hope you have a good time there. Love, Kyra and don’t forgot again to love and miss me. I will love and miss you too. Love, Kyra and I will love you back and do not and I mean do not forget about me.

I failed on one account. Sadly, I did tuck in my shirt.

Upcoming appearance

I’ll be at the Minnesota Educational Media Organization Fall conference on Friday, October 1st.

I’ll be signing in the vendor room (morning and afternoon) and also speaking on the afternoon authors panel. If anyone is planning on attending the conference, I’d love to chat with you. Stop by. I’m bringing Smarties and Nerds. Plus you can help me figure out what to say on the author panel. Those who know me in real life know that I’m all about the talking. (Ha.)

It was an epic kind of week

This week around the web, in case you missed it:

Over at The Epic Rat, which is an epic name for a blog, comes this epic review of The Geek Girl’s Guide to Cheerleading. I think this may actually be one of my favorite reviews of all time. I’m still grinning about it.

And speaking of epic, this is a pretty epic visual poem, presented by Radiolab and NPR:

All you Nerd Fighters have probably seen this one already, but I have to post because it’s, you know, epic. John Green on Looking for Alaska at My High School:

Amazing news of the amazing variety

So last night, about 5:45, I’d been home about five minutes or so. Here’s what was going on:

  • I was on the computer, trying to order pizza* online, while fielding “suggestions” from the kids.
  • The dog was leaping about, wanting to go outside.
  • The cat wanted her food.
  • Other noisy things.

The phone rang. Andrew picked it up without answering it. He said, “Mom, this Birmingham number’s been calling all day long.”

He thought it might be one of our relatives from down south trying out a new cell phone. Why he thought this and didn’t answer the phone is one of those mysteries forever locked in the mind of a thirteen-year-old boy.

So. I’m not sure what to expect when I answer the phone. It turns out to be the contest coordinator from the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence contest. And yeah, I wondered: Why is she calling me? They already announced the finalists.

Turns out, this is why:

Yeah, Geek Girl won the young adult category. I know. I can barely believe it either. But what a great way to start out a long weekend.

* We went with half pepperoni, half sausage and mushroom and some cheesy bread.

Once again, Polyvore makes my day

Ever have one of those days when the best thing about the day is that it’s Friday and the end of the work week?

Yeah, that’s been me, pretty much since Wednesday (except then, it wasn’t Friday, which made it all that much worse). Then, through the magic that is our 21st century technology, I was alerted to this:

It’s a Polyvore devoted to Bethany from The Geek Girl’s Guide to Cheerleading. And yeah, my mind boggled a little when I saw it. A thing of beauty and all that.

The little details are amazing and made me smile–like the Lara Croft image, and the T-wolves, and a fantastic cheer uniform, and, and, and … I could go on. Oh, the embedded music (told you I could go on). You’ll have to click through for that.

This is just the cutest thing EVER. I’m all set for the weekend now.

Today’s post brought to you by the letter Squeee!

Okay, so squee isn’t a letter. It should be. Yesterday, our editor informed us that The Geek Girl’s Guide to Cheerleading is going into a second printing.

Am I excited? Is Darcy? Maybe a little. (Okay, maybe a lot.) But more than that, we’re grateful. Because, clearly, if people weren’t reading Geek Girl, there wouldn’t be a need for a second printing.

So, thanks to everyone who has read and support Geek Girl. We wouldn’t be here without you.

Carry on

Yes, it’s true. Now you can have Geek Girl and carry things in it too:

It's a book, a purse, a book, a purse!

That's the first page you see.

Actually, you can have just about any book and carry it too, thanks to Karla at Bagitude. Or playbill, or album, or game.

This was one of my gifts from Bob this year. Except. I discovered Bagitude to begin with, and had a Geek Girl one made for Darcy. So … surprise? Not so much. Still, awesomeness factor = high. Bob suggested I keep my bookmarks and pens in there for book signings, which is exactly what I’m going to do.

On a completely different note. It’s minus seventeen degrees here this morning. Minus. Seven. Teen. Dude. It’s so cold, the ice on the back deck is making that bone-jarring cracking noise. So every once in a while, it sounds like someone is firing a shotgun right outside the window.

Because dangerously cold isn’t enough. It isn’t winter unless it’s scaring the crap out of you at random intervals.

Ha! Do you love it? It’s in my size, too.

Well, I’m off to cash in some of those gift certificates. Hope everyone had a lovely holiday. Here’s to a happy 2010!
