Welcome to Booking Through Thursday, a weekly bookish meme about books and reading for everyone who loves both. Booking Through Thursday was first hosted by Deb. With permission, I’ve restarted it in 2026.
This week’s prompt:
Are you a Goldilocks reader? Do you like everything to be just right? You know, the lighting, the temperature, the right blanket, along with a drink and snacks? Or are you someone who can read nearly anywhere?
If so, you can still tell us about your ideal reading space.
Are you a Goldilocks reader (everything needs to be just right)? Or can you read anywhere?
How to play:
- On your blog: Copy the question/image for your blog, answer it there, and post a quick comment here with a link or trackback to your post so we can read it.
- On social media: Copy the image, answer the prompt, and post a quick comment here with a link.
- Right here: Answer in the comments and start the discussion here. No need to have a blog to play.
Note: If it’s your first time here, your comment may end up in moderation. (My spam filter is aggressive.) I’ll be in after my writing sprints to set it free.
P.S. The prompt is always open, and you don’t have to play on Thursday. Comment whenever you like!

So, I can read *almost* anywhere. I really can’t read in the car (and trains and airplanes are challenging, too). I don’t get violently car sick, but I do get a massive headache that just won’t quit.
Honestly, I think this is one reason I ended up as a writer. I couldn’t read on our cross-country trips to the Oregon coast, so I had to make up stories in my head. One day, I had the epiphany that I could simply write these stories down.
I do have an ideal reading spot in my living room, and I love having a cup of tea and some cookies while I read. My chair is by a picture window, so lots of natural light for reading print during the day, but it’s still cozy in the evenings.
Your living room reading situation sounds pretty darn perfect — especially with tea and cookies! In the past, I’d try to read curled up on the sofa, but it wasn’t great for reading more than 15 or 20 minutes at a time; then finally, a few years ago, despite my husband’s objects, I bought a recliner, and it has been just the best thing for my reading life… I can sit there for hours!
I have the recliner my mom bought a few years ago when she moved from Wisconsin back to Minnesota. I can also sit there and read (or watch something) for hours.
I love that you started writing your own stories when you couldn’t read on long car trips. When I was a kid I used to get those awful headaches from reading in the car/on the school bus, too. Didn’t stop me, but did make me super miserable for hours after I got home. On a phone or Kindle, I can read anywhere: home, restaurant, car, bus, train, plane. But for physical books, I need proper lighting, so the time of day and the room I’m in are very important. I’ve been trying to read more physical books in the past few years because smart devises are such a slippery slope, but finding a good balance is hard.
I’m the same way: I need proper lighting (i.e., daylight) to read print. Also, I mentioned on an earlier BTT post, I have some hand arthritis that makes holding some print books difficult, so I love my e-reader.
